Joshua Tree National Park - Artist in Residence Day 4

West Side Trail

I spent the morning finishing sorting through photographs, then drove to town to check out the farmer's market and get some groceries I forgot last time.  I spent time reading through several guides to the park, planning out some of the places I want to explore again, hikes I'd like to do.  By the time I was done with all this, it was late afternoon, so instead of driving over to the heart of the park as I had planned, I opted to hike part of the West Side Trail to watch the sun set.

Hiking the West Side Trail with the sun in my eyes, had to get a little creative in trying to photograph the landscape.

Looking back down on the campground area.

A high point along the trail with a nice view of the San Bernardio mountains and San Gorgonio Peak.

Closeup of the bark of a very old joshua tree, all but the oldest trees have a layer of dead spines sheltering the trunk from the sun and water loss due to evaporation.
